Mohana, August 1: In a courageous act of self-defence, a middle-aged woman bludgeoned a man to death when the latter allegedly attempted to outrage her modesty Monday night. The incident was reported from Lakapadar village under Mohana police limits in Gajapati district.
The deceased was identified as Bhaskar Mallick (45) of the same village. Police seized the body and sent it for post-mortem. A case has been registered in this connection and a probe launched.
According to police, Mallick went to the woman’s house in an inebriated state while she was alone Monday late evening. Taking advantage of the absence of other members of her family, he allegedly tried to rape the woman.
In a bid to save herself, the woman picked up an iron rod and beat the deceased repeatedly, bludgeoning him. Later, she dragged an unconscious Mallick and dumped him in the backyard of her house. Terrified over the unexpected turn of events, she did not dare to inform the incident to any family member throughout the night.
Tuesday morning, Mallick’s family members became apprehensive as he did not return home. They eventually traced Mallick to the lady’s backyard and rescued him. Initially, Mallick was admitted to Mohana community health centre (CHC). However, the accused succumbed to his injuries on the way to Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.
During interrogation, the woman confessed she beat him up severely to “save herself from being raped,” IIC Prasant Kumar Behera said.
