Bhubaneswar: To mark National Handloom Day, Utkaliyas—a passionate collective of handloom saree enthusiasts—celebrated Odisha’s rich textile heritage with pride and elegance.
Padma Shri Aruna Mohanty, renowned Odissi dancer, graced the occasion as chief guest. In her address, she highlighted Odisha’s age-old weaving traditions, describing them as a symbolic cultural legacy that beautifully blends handloom with performing arts.
Two promising young weavers from Nuapatna were felicitated at the event. They shared inspiring glimpses of their weaving journeys, showcasing how they have preserved the ancestral craft with dedication and innovation. Around seventy Utkaliyas members from across the state proudly showcased an array of Odisha’s iconic weaves—from Sambalpuri, Bomkai, Kotpad, and Khandua to Gopalpur tussar, Berhampuri, Khurda, and contemporary designs.
Each saree reflected the unique identity, craftsmanship, and cultural richness of its weaving cluster. Through such initiatives, Utkaliyas continues to inspire younger generations to embrace India’s handloom legacy—particularly the six-yard drape—as a symbol of sustainable fashion and cultural pride.
