Nandapur: A woman and her teenage daughter drowned Thursday in a newly dug pond at Balia village under Lamtaput block of Nandapur police limits in Koraput district.
The deceased were identified as Nabina Majhi, 40, wife of Sanu Majhi at Harganda village of Nandapur block and their daughter Ambika Majhi, 15.
According to police, the two had gone to their farmland at Balia village to work on their ginger cultivation.

Sources said Ambika entered the pond to bathe when her mother was busy in farm work.
However, she was unaware of its depth and started drowning.
Hearing her daughter’s cries, Nabina rushed in to save her, but she also drowned.
A team led by Hemant Kumar Samal, Officer In-Charge of Nandapur fire services, fished out both bodies and handed them over to the police.
Nandapur police registered a case (13/2025) of unnatural death and launched an investigation, Inspector In-Charge Mamata Panda said.
The bodies have been preserved at the Nandapur community health centre morgue and will be handed over to the family after the post-mortem Friday, police said.
