An incident that tarnishes the image of police has emerged from Gurugram, Haryana, after a viral video showed three officers taking a bribe from a foreign tourist. The incident, linked to a helmet rule violation, prompted Gurugram police to take immediate action and suspend all three officers.
The case involves a Japanese tourist riding a scooter while wearing a helmet. The pillion rider seated behind her was not wearing one. Officers stopped them and said they would have to pay a fine of 1,000 rupees for breaking the rules. In the video, one officer is clearly heard saying, “You can pay the money here or in court.”

The tourist then asked, “Can I make Visa card or touch payment?” The officer replied, “No Visa touch.”
The tourist pulled out two 500-rupee notes from pocket and handed them over to the policemen. Notably, the officers accepted the money without issuing a receipt. Someone recorded the entire incident and posted the video on social media, where it quickly went viral and sparked widespread criticism.
Social media users said such incidents tarnish India’s image abroad. While the government talks about attracting tourists and providing a safe environment, they said, such episodes raise questions about the entire system.
Gurugram police treated the incident seriously and immediately suspended the three officers involved. Officials said stricter action will follow once the investigation is complete.
