Koraput: A 60-year-old man was found dead near railway tracks close to Mohanpada village under Koraput block Monday, raising suspicions of murder.
The deceased has been identified as Gangadhar Majhi, a resident of the same village. Majhi had been missing for the past two days.
Villagers first spotted the body near the tracks early in the morning and immediately alerted the police. Initial inputs suggest that Majhi was recently involved in a land dispute, which police are treating as a possible motive. However, some locals speculated that the death could also be linked to accusations of witchcraft.
Police personnel from Dumuriput and Sunabeda rushed to the scene, while a scientific team from Koraput arrived to carry out forensic analysis. The body has been seized and sent for post-mortem.
Speaking to the media, Sunabeda IIC Sushma Kahanr said, “We have recovered the body near the railway tracks and initiated an investigation. Both land dispute and sorcery-related angles are being verified. The post-mortem and forensic reports will give us clarity on the cause of death, and appropriate action will be taken against those responsible.”
