London: Ines Henriques of Portugal breezed home to win the inaugural Women’s 50km walk here. The 37-year-old crossed the finishing line at ‘The Mall’ here in 4:05:56s surpassing her previous best of 4:08:26s which she had set in January earlier this year at Porto de Mós. Yin Hang of China claimed silver with an Asian record of 4:08:58s while her 20-year-old compatriot Shuqing Yang finished took bronze clocking 4:20:49s.
Obiri stuns Ayana
Kenyan Hellen Obiri produced an amazing last lap to surprise defending champion Almaz Ayana and win the women’s 5,000 metres here, Sunday. Ethiopian Ayana, led Obiri on her shoulder into the final lap until the Kenyan, silver medallist in Rio Olympics last year, burst past with 300 metres left and stormed home to win in 14:34.86s, more than five seconds clear of her rival. Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands took the bronze medal taking the bronze clocking 14:42.73s.
USA retain title
Rio Olympic champions United States reclaimed their women’s 4x400m relay world title as Jamaica suffered more injury heartbreak here Sunday. Twenty four hours after Usain Bolt sensationally pulled up in his relay event, Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby slowed down clutching her leg 20 metres into her second leg and went to ground, ending Jamaica’s reign as World Champions. The American quatret comprising of Aaliyah Brown, Allyson Felix, Tori Bowie and Morolake Akinosun clocked 3:19.02s to clinch the crown whereas Great Britain claimed the silver clocking 3:25.00s. Poland took away the bronze medal with a timing of 3:25.41s.
Gold for Perkovic
Two-time Olympic champion Sandra Perkovic of Croatia eased her way to a second world discus title after becoming the only athlete to throw over 70m at the World Championships here Sunday. She threw the discus to a distance of 70.31m on her second attempt to win gold. Dani Stevens of Australia (69.64m) settled for silver whereas Mélina Robert-Michon(66.21m) took bronze.
