BHUBANESWAR: Utkal University will screen a Japanese movie “Swing Girls” for its students and faculty members during a seminar-cum-workshop titled ‘A Day With Japan’ Tuesday, to develop a better understanding about Japan and its people. The movie directed by Shinobu Yaguch will be screened at 4.30 pm at PG Council Hall, and it’s open to all, said Professor Prasanna Patra, head of anthropology department and course-coordinator of Japanese language. A workshop “Calligraphy demonstration-cum-workshop” to showcase Japan’s unique art forms by an expert calligraphy teacher Hiroko Nagahma, will also be organised. Nagahma has come all the way from Japan for the workshop. The participants will also get an opportunity to have a hands-on experience on this traditional art using traditional brush, ink and paper sourced from Japan. The workshop will be relevant and meaningful to not only the Japanese language students but also to all other students of the university as calligraphy is a fine and expressive art. University officials said the main purpose of organising such events is to generate interest
among students to study Japanese language professionally. “As Odisha has several Buddhist sites that draw tourists from Japan, learning this language professionally will open plenty of opportunities for our students and research scholars,” Patra said. The anthropology Department of the varsity started the free course October 29, 2015, as a pilot project supported by the state government. Students pursuing the course were provided help to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test held July each year. “In the first batch, 15 MPhil and PhD students have already been trained. This year, we are planning to take 20 students, including two from other universities,” Patra said.
