Cincinnati1: Grigor Dimitrov clinched the Cincinnati Open title with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Nick Kyrgios here, Sunday. This was Dimitrov’s first Masters title after his straight sets victory in the injury-depleted tournament final. The title was also the 26-year-old’s third of the season following victories in Brisbane and Sofia.
Both were playing in their first Masters final and they played some impressive tennis, including a 23-shot rally in the fifth game.
Dimitrov, who jumped to ninth spot in ATP rankings, broke serve in the next game by crashing a superb forehand down the line and he served out the set comfortably.
A tight second set swung the way of the Bulgarian in the 11th game when he broke serve again when Kyrgios over-hit a forehand past the baseline. He was crowned champion on his second match point when the Australian hit a return into the net.
Nadal tops rankings
Madrid: Spanish Rafael Nadal has regained the World No.1 spot in the ATP singles rankings for the first time since July 2014, the ATP said Monday. Murray, who was out of action because of a hip injury, drops to second spot with 7,150 points. Roger Federer remained in third place after he withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters with a back injury. Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov jumped to the ninth spot after winning the Cincinnati title. Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Alexander Zverev, Marin Cilic and Dominic Thiem are placed fourth to eighth in the rankings respectively. Japanese Kei Nishikori is 10th in the chart.
