Malkangiri: A 20-year-old girl, living up to the promise which she made during Raksha Bandhan while tying the thread on the wrist of her brother, has come forward to donate one of her kidneys to save her younger brother’s life.
However, the family of Dipak Das of MV-72 village under MV-79 police limits in this district is struggling to arrange the amount required for transplantation of the life-saving organ, a report said.
Dipak’s wife Suchitra, with tears rolling down her cheeks, urged people to donate to save her son’s life.
His son Debashis (18) was first admitted to the district headquarters hospital here in February and later shifted to a private hospital in Visakhapatnam after he complained of severe pain in his abdomen. An investigation at the hospital revealed that both his kidneys were damaged.
Though the family spent close to Rs one lakh to cure Debashis by mortgaging their properties, it didn’t yield any result. Later, they received an assistance of Rs 3.5 lakh from the state government thanks to local MLA Manas Madkami. However, the amount got exhausted soon in buying expensive drugs, injections and other investigations.
With Debashis’s health deteriorating by the day, his elder sister Trupti offered to donate her kidney to save his life. However, the procedure of kidney transplantation was found by the family to be complicated and expensive affair. A lot of money is required for the tests to be conducted on Trupti’s body ahead of the transplantation, the doctors said. They estimated the cost at Rs 7 lakh.
Since the family was not in a position to spend this amount, they approached the state government again and thankfully Rs 3 lakh has been credited to the bank account of the hospital on behalf of the government. The family members who are in Visakhapatnam are spending sleepless nights over arrangement of balance Rs 4 lakh.
While Trupti has set a trend of sort in the state by donating her kidney to save the life of her brother, her mother sought financial assistance from generous individuals and organisations to save her son’s life. PNN
