Berhampur: A woman doctor from Berhampur, soon to turn 100, has shown remarkable generosity by donating her lifelong savings to support healthcare development.
Identified as Professor Dr K Lakshmibai, a retired obstetrician and gynaecologist, has donated Rs 3.4 crore to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, ahead of her centenary celebration.
The donation has been earmarked for the Women’s Cancer Care and Treatment Centre in the AIIMS. Born December 5, 1926, Lakshmibai studied MBBS at Srirama Chandra Bhanja (SCB) Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack from 1945 to 1950.

She was a member of the institution’s first MBBS batch. She later completed a diploma and then a master’s degree in obstetrics and gynaecology from Madras Medical College in 1958.
Lakshmibai began her medical career in 1950 at the district headquarters hospital in Sundargarh. She retired in 1986 from Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
She now lives in her home at Bhaba Nagar in Berhampur.
She is expected to announce the donation formally during her 100th birthday celebration to be held December 5.
Lakshmibai said she is delighted to dedicate her lifelong savings to healthcare services.
Her former students, including renowned gynaecology professors P Bharati and Dr Bharati Mishra, are coordinating the process.
They said their mentor’s generosity will inspire many as they expressed their happiness.
Lakshmibai has previously received the Bharat Jyoti Award, the International Friendship Society Award and the Best Citizen of India Award for her contributions to healthcare services.
