Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will inaugurate the Sahid Laxam Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH) in Koraput Monday.
On the eve of Teachers Day, the Chief Minister is also likely to address the first batch of students of the new government medical college. The inauguration of the MCH assumes significance as this would be the fourth government medical college and hospital in the state which is being opened after a gap of 55 years.
The MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur was set up in 1962. The VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla and SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack had been established in 1959 and 1944 respectively.
The college will also meet the aspirations of the people of the undivided Koraput region comprising Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Nabarangpur districts. The Koraput district headquarters is well connected to backward districts Kalahandi and Nuapada on road.
Reacting to the new development, Health Minister Pratap Jena said classes in the MCH will start Monday. It took almost two years for the state government to build the SLNMCH after laying its foundation stone in August 2015.
Nearly `192crore was spent for the MCH project, while `50crore additional budget has been earmarked for procurement of its equipment.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) had issued the Letter of Permission (LoP) to the Medical College and Hospital with a student intake capacity of 100 this year.
The Health Minister also indicated that the proposed Pandit Raghunath Murmu medical college at Baripada in Mayurbhanj which will be the fifth government medical college in the state, will be inaugurated September 6.
The state government has also plans to set up two more medical colleges at Balasore and Bolangir in 2018-19, the minister added.
