Udala: A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging after learning that her boyfriend had died due to a snakebite in Mayurbhanj district, police said Sunday.
The incident occurred Saturday in Dimagadia village under Kochiladiha panchayat in Udala police limits.
The deceased was identified as Devi Singh, 21, the younger daughter of Maheswar Singh.
Sources said Maheswar had been working in a captive power plant (CPP) in Angul but returned to his village due to some family problems 12 years back while his sister continued to work in the CPP.
According to police and family members, Devi had been in a relationship with Pintu Singh, 24, a resident of Basila Hutting area in Angul district.
The two reportedly met while Devi was visiting her aunt in Angul, where Pintu also worked at the CPP.
Their friendship later developed into a relationship and they had planned to marry, according to family members.
Later, Devi returned home to Dimagadia village but remained in touch with Pintu over phone.
Tragedy struck when Pintu was bitten by a venomous snake four days ago and was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Kataka, where he later succumbed during treatment.
After receiving the news of his death, Devi was left heartbroken, stopped eating for two days and remained in a state of depression, family members said.
On Saturday afternoon, while her father and brother were away from home, she reportedly hanged herself using a scarf behind the house.
Her family rushed her to the Uda la Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Police recovered the body, conducted an inquest and sent it for post-mortem before handing it over to the family members.
An unnatural death case (57/26) was registered in this connection, and further investigation is underway.
