Baragada: Police seized 813 bottles of cough syrup, Rs 333,600 in cash and other items from an underground chamber behind a house in Badmal village of Baragada district and arrested a 40-year-old woman in connection with the alleged illegal trade, police said at a press meet Wednesday.
A team from Bhatli police station raided the house of Parbati Sahu and her husband, Suryakant, Tuesday following a tip-off about their alleged involvement in the cough syrup trade.
Suryakant fled during the raid, while Parbati was present at the house and was arrested.
During a search of the premises, police found an underground chamber constructed behind the house, where the couple had allegedly concealed the cough syrup.
Officers seized all 813 bottles from the chamber.
The seizure also included Rs 333,600 in cash, a Mahindra Bolero, a Mahindra Thar, four mobile phones, bank passbooks, ATM cards, Aadhaar and voter identity cards, police said.
Parbati was produced before a court in Baragada Wednesday.
After her bail plea was rejected, she was sent to the district jail.
Police have launched a search for Suryakant, who remains at large, and are investigating the involvement of other people in the alleged trade. A case (278/26) has been registered at Bhatli police station.
The raid was conducted on the direction of Bargarh Superintendent of Police Rabindra Nath Satapathy.
