Mixing up countries can cause a lot of confusion

If you’re a fan of Donald Trump, you’ll be glad to know that India has been on his mind lately. In fact, he posted about India on social media on Oct 4: “125 Million People voted today in the first round of India’s Presidential Election. The results came out shortly after the vote closed, on the SAME DAY!” His Truth Social post puzzled many people, but they quickly realised that Trump had mixed up India and Brazil. He meant to compliment Brazil’s election process, while denigrating what he considers vote rigging in America, but India was apparently on his mind. Trump soon deleted the erroneous post—one of his aides may have pointed out the mistake—but not before the post had been captured in screenshots. For Trump critics, it was proof that the president was losing his mind.

For Trump’s supporters, it was proof that Democrats were occasionally hacking into his Truth Social account. You may think that this was just a simple mistake, but when a country’s leader starts mixing up names, it can cause a lot of confusion. Trump (speaking to reporters): “Before I talk about my new economic initiatives, I want everyone to know that I am very optimistic about a peace agreement between Russia and India. I have spoken to both leaders and they seem very willing to do it.” Reporter: “Do you mean Ukraine?” Trump: “Yes, yes, Ukraine. Of course I mean Ukraine. I am very optimistic about a peace agreement between Ukraine and India. I spoke to both leaders.” Reporter: “You spoke to Prime Minister Modi?” Trump: “Yes, I spoke to him. He is at peace with the idea of peace. I didn’t have to do much convincing. I am good at peace. It comes naturally to me, and one of these days, the Nobel Prize committee will realize it too.” Mixing up names during a social media post or speech may result in little more than ridicule, but there’s always a chance that Trump will wake up one day and decide to bomb the wrong country. He will summon Pete Hegseth, Secretary of War, into the White House to give him the instructions. Trump: “We need to act fast. Just keep bombing Algeria until they agree to do something about all their online scam artists.” Hegseth: “Algeria? Sir, do you mean Nigeria.” Trump: “Algeria, Nigeria, what’s the difference? Aren’t they both in Africa?” Hegseth: “Yes, they’re both in Africa, but they’re different countries. Africa is a large continent.” Trump: “You think I don’t know that? I know all about Africa. Now please go ahead and bomb Niger.” Hegseth: “You mean Nigeria?” Trump: “Stop correcting me! Just pick a country and bomb it. I need to get everyone’s attention away from the economy.” It’s one thing to mistake Niger for Nigeria; it’s quite another to mistake India for Brazil. They’re not even on the same continent, but to Trump’s credit, they’re at least in the same hemisphere. Some Trump critics believe that the 80-year-old president is suffering from cognitive decline and his brain is just not working as well as it used to. This assumes that a much younger Trump, perhaps in his mid-forties, would be able to find Brazil on a map.

Perhaps he would, but he’d surely be stumped by Niger. I know a few people in their eighties and none of them would mistake India for Brazil. Then again, none of them would be posting dozens of messages on social media every day. They’ve got more important things to do, such as reading books and spending time with their grandchildren. If only Trump could find something important to do.
