Bhubaneswar: ‘Baanjha’ (sterile) is a one-act play that tells the story of a hapless father, who was ill treated and rejected by his children. The play was staged at the Bhanjakala Mandap Friday during the first state-level Natya Andolan-2017 organised by Samatara Swara Sabuja, a cultural organisation.
As the curtain rises and the lights come on we see the soul of the dead father on stage speaking to the audience about his miserable fate. The protagonist begins by telling about the wonderful moments he had with his wife when he was alive, and later how his heaven was made a hell by his children after they grew up.
The old man’s son married a woman against the wishes of his parents and then treated them badly. After a horrible time the old man dies and his wife dies 11 days after his death. At the cemetery, the souls of both the husband and wife meet and they regret having children.
The play concludes with both deciding not to have any children in their next birth if they again become husband and wife. The wife says she prefers to be born barren in her next birth.
The play was penned and directed by Prangya Ranjan Khatua and KK portrays the lead character.
Talking to Orissa POST KK said, “I consider it a privilege that the director picked me for the lead role. I tried my best to portray the character well.” He added that he didn’t feel any pressure in his solo role but was psychologically deeply involved with the character.
KK has portrayed several characters in dramas, Oriya cinemas and TV serials. “I learned three things from the three platforms. I gained confidence from plays, experience from cinemas and experimented in TV serials.”
KK can be seen in the upcoming Oriya film Manara Mansingh. At present he is also working for the TV serial ‘Nua Bahu’.
