Umerkote, Jan 28: A Class-IX student of Sinsari Ashram School here in Nabarangpur district died late Tuesday night while undergoing treatment in the local community health centre (CHC) due to alleged medical negligence. The death of Dayaban Harijan triggered tension on the hospital premises.
According to reports, Dayaban, who was affected by dysentery Monday, was first admitted to Sinsari primary health centre (PHC) and later to the CHC.
Bhagawan Harijan, the father of the deceased, along with his two other sons Mahendra and Rabindra alleged that the boy died due to negligence on the part of the school teachers and hospital authorities.
Though the student was affected by dysentery Monday, the school authorities, instead of providing him immediate medical care, asked the family members over telephone to take him back home, Bhagawan alleged.
Bhagawan, after arriving at the school, admitted the boy to the PHC and later shifted him to Umerkote CHC as his condition worsened. The CHC doctor didn’t turn up to attend to the patient despite repeated requests by the family members, Bhagawan alleged, adding, Dayaban succumbed Tuesday night after being administered two injections by one of the doctors.
Hemoglobin count in the blood of the deceased was less which caused his death, CHC sources said. Tension ran high on the hospital premises as the news spread. On being informed, police along with local tehsildar Tarani Suna reached the
hospital and pacified the crowd.
When contacted, the school headmaster rubbished the allegations of the family saying proper healthcare was extended to the student. Sukanta Satpathy, the physician of the hospital, also supported the headmaster and said the facts would come to fore after post-mortem.
Police registered a case of unnatural death over a complaint lodged by the bereaved family.
