Cuttack: Eight years after she was incapacitated for life by an acid attack, the mother of the victim moved the Orissa High Court Monday alleging police inaction and sought a CBI probe into the case.
The victim’s mother, who hails from Kanakpur in Tirtol police limits in Jagatsinghpur district, filed the petition in the HC with the help of legal services institute Committee for Legal Aid to Poor (CLAP) and made the CBI, state home department, Jagatsinghpur SP and Tirtol police station inspector-in-charge parties to the case.
The petitioner alleged that while her daughter is going through hell, the police are sitting on the case due to political pressure. “My daughter awaits justice for the last eight years,” she said.
The victim’s mother informed the court that a youth from Barakpur in Bhadrak district had one-sided love with her daughter. The victim was on her way home April 18, 2009 evening when the accused and his associates threw acid on her. The victim suffered 70 per cent burns.
She had been in coma for two years after the acid attack and subsequently lost her vision. The victim’s mother had lodged a complaint in this regard May 4, 2009 and a case was registered at Tirtol police station. However, the police are remaining silent after registering a case and did not make any arrests so far, the victim’s mother contended.
Meanwhile, the police May 5, 2012 submitted the final probe report of the case to sub-divisional judicial magistrate of Jagatsinghpur. In the report, the police informed the court that they were still clueless about the criminals and hence could not make any arrests.
The shocking statement of the police has scattered the victim’s hope for justice. The victim’s family has questioned the police probe and appealed to the court to unearth the truth behind the police inaction. The victim’s family said that they have lost their faith in the police inquiry.
Sources said, after the acid attack the victim had given a photograph of the main accused and other crucial details to the police. However, the police closed the case, citing lack of evidence and that the criminals were untraceable.
“Many influential persons are backing the criminals and the police closed the case due to political pressure. As a result, my daughter has been deprived of justice,” the victim’s mother alleged.
The petitioner further alleged that the accused is now working in the armed forces and posted outside the state, praying to the court to transfer the case from the police to CBI.
