Cuttack: The ninth convocation of Cuttack’s Ravenshaw University was held Tuesday at the university.
Delivering the convocation address the guest of honour UGC Chairman Professor Virendra Singh Chauhan said that India is all set to secure a major place in higher education as better funding and quality education are in the offing in the country now.
Calling upon students to grab the opportunity the UGC chairman said higher education is in a transitional period due to the invasion of technology.
He disapproved of the idea that successful education is making students capable of bagging a job the day they step out of universities.
“Education is training of the mind. You may be taught something in class, but you learn much more outside by interacting with others”, Prof. Chauhan said, adding that education is learning from others, to be able to appreciate someone’s view to be better than yours and to have a sense of entitlement.
“Education is very important for all individuals and those who are educated are privileged. In fact, the true meaning of education is serving society. Convocation is held to acknowledge the best and one can always self-assess through rankings,” Prof. Chauhan added.
In his annual report Vice-Chancellor Professor Sarangi said, “Ravenshaw University is only a decade old, but it is in its 150th year and the sesquicentennial celebrations are in progress.” He said the new research hub of Ravenshaw has been named Mahanadi Campus and the university has also won NAAC’s ‘A’ grade rating.
Professor Hrushikesh Senapati and Mrs Binapani Mohanty and Chief Guest UGC Chairman Professor Virendra Singh Chauhan were conferred the prestigious HONORIS CAUSA award.
The programme started with the song Bande Utkal Jannai and the Ravenshaw Anthem.
At the convocation 64 students were awarded PhD while 30 students each from PG and UG were awarded gold medals for their outstanding performance in the 2016-17 academic session.
Drigja Sahu from the Department of Geology won the gold medal for the ‘Best Graduate’ in 2016-2017.
