A ‘hot’ Winter session on the cards

Bhubaneswar: The winter session of Orissa Legislative Assembly is set to witness a triangular fight among leading political parties of the state – Congress, BJP and BJD – who are gearing themselves up to corner one another over a host of issues. The session will commence November 28.
The political parties in order to prepare themselves for a strong battle ahead will hold their
respective legislature party
meetings Monday, separately, to finalise their strategy for the ensuing session.
Ahead of the session, principal opposition Congress has already mounted its attack on BJP and ruling BJD, making it clear that issues pertaining to farmers will top the agenda during the session.
“Though will finalized the strategy during our LP meeting Monday evening, our focus will be on farmers’ plight,” said senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra to this paper over phone.
Mishra further said, “Issues such as crop loss, crop burning, pest attack, paltry hike in paddy MSP, farmers’ suicide and other problems of farmers will be raised strongly on the floor of the house.”
Upping his ante against the Modi government at Centre, Mishra said, “We will raise the issue of how the Prime Minister of our country has disrespected and dishonoured the Orissa Legislative Assembly (OLA).”
The Speaker of the OLA has written letter to Prime Minister thrice seeking a date to meet him and submit memo regarding paddy MSP (demanding an increase in MSP to 2,930 per quintal of paddy). However, neither he nor his office has responded to it.”
“Besides, we will also raise the matter as to how, the BJP led government at the Centre and BJD government in state has failed to provide employment to youth,” he said.
Highlighting the alleged gang rape of a minor girl in Kunduli and rape of a minor girl in Kendrapara, the LoP said that the law and order situation has deteriorated in the state and the state government has remained a mute spectator to it. He questioned the police investigation in the Kunduli case and also alleged that police was trying to shield some people in the Kendrapara case. All these issues will be highlighted, he said.
Mishra said that the party will also raise the issue of Mahanadi, during the session.
Meanwhile, both BJP and Congress have also decided to bring a privilege motion against state finance minister Shashibhusan Behera for disclosing the supplementary budget figure to media before the same was tabled in the house.
BJP state unit president Basant Panda said that the party will also highlight how the BJD government has failed to address the plight of the farmers. The saffron party will raise the issue of crop loss, farmer suicide, large scale vacancies in health and education sector, law and order issues in the state among others.
Meanwhile, the ruling BJD is also planning to raise the issue of paddy MSP issue to corner the opposition.
BJD Chief Whip Amar Satpathy said that the BJD is prepared to face the opposition and is ready for debate on any issue.
The BJD leaders said that the party will also raise the issue of Polavaram and Mahanadi and highlight how Orissa’s interest has been compromised in both the cases. The party is hopeful of taking its rivals on these issues.
