Puri: At least 25 scholars from nine states are learning Scriptures at Gobardhan peeth here under the tutelage of Shankaracharya Nischalanand Saraswati for the past couple of months.
According to sources pontiff Saraswati has been teaching ancient Hindu texts like Vedas and Upanishads for last 25 years. Saraswati, an ardent votary of Hinduism, never goes out of his ashram in monsoons. “The Seer guides his scholars on Scriptures and Vedanta during rainy days. The session begins on a full moon day of Hindu month of Asadha and concludes on the corresponding day of Bhadraba,” said an inmate of Gobardhan peeth.
Mutt sources said Saraswati lectures on Upanishadas before noon. He teaches Srimad Bhagabat, Vedantas and Brahamasutras in the afternoon.
“Rainy season is considered the breeding time for insects and worms. The Seer does not go out of ashram in order to avoid stepping on living organisms. So, he spends his time in discourse and scholastic activities,” said Tejpal Sharma, a retired professor of city-based Sri Jagannath Sanskrit University.
Mutt sources said many people have left lucrative jobs to study the essence of Vedas and Upanishadas under the Pontiff’s guidance. This time around, an engineer from Andhra Pradesh has been learning Vedanta at the Peeth. “I earned enough money by serving a US company for the past two decades. I have come here to learn Scipture from the Swamiji. I am getting real peace by going through Vedantas,” said Srinivash Maheswarala.
Bhubaneswar-based sholar Prakash said he joined the Gobardhan peeth after learning about Saraswati’s wisdom. “I have attended three learning sessions at the mutt. Guruji has vast understanding of Vedantas,” he said.
According to sources, mutt management offers free food and boarding to scholars attending Saraswati’s classes.
