Abandoned, defunct multi-crore government projects gather dust

Rayagada: The state and central government have been spending crores of rupees in the name of development however, in many cases rampant corruption has made all these yojanas hollow.

Departmental officers are giving unrealistic and superfluous reports to the government on the status of operation of such projects.

One such incident that was reported Friday by Orissa POST was the unused cold storage at Rayagada district headquarters which has turned into godown for timber smugglers.

Furthermore, reports said a multi-crore project hatchery that was constructed seven years ago is now lying unused.

The school building was constructed by the DRDA. Even if it has been four years since the completion of its construction, it has not been handed over to our department so far. Moreover, there is no road access to the school too

If that was not enough, a high school built in 2015 in the Halua panchayat headquarter which is just five kilometre away from Rayagada city also remains defunct. It has been around four years and it is yet to become operational. It is learnt that around Rs 50 lakh was spent on the school.

Reacting to this, the district education officer (DEO) Purnachandra Biria said, “The school building was constructed by the district rural development agency (DRDA). Even if it has been four years since the completion of the school construction, it has not been handed over to our department so far. Moreover, there is no road access to the school too.”

The villagers and social activists have strongly expressed their dissatisfaction over the issue.
