Absentee teachers to face salary reduction

Post News Network

Bhubaneswar: The state government has asked collectors to deduct salaries of teachers who have been absent without authorisation. The order comes nearly a month after the protest of the gana sikshyaks disrupted academics in the state.
“I would like to inform you that gana sikshyaks in many districts belonging to elementary schools have staged demonstrations in Bhubaneswar. It is quite possible that agitating gana sikshyaks are absent from their duty stations without authorisation. Hence, steps should be taken to stop their remuneration for the days of unauthorised absence on the basis of no-work no-pay,” school and mass education secretary Ranjana Chopra wrote to all collectors Wednesday.
Chopra also asked the collectors and district education officers to submit action taken reports in this regard soon.
The teachers, who have been agitating in the state capital since December 22, are demanding that the jobs of those who have completed six years in service be regularised. Recently, they had also tried to gherao Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s residence Naveen Niwas.
The state government had a few days ago said it would regularise the jobs of contractual teachers in the coming financial year. However, this has not satisfied the teachers, who are continuing their agitation.
