Udala: An accused person was allegedly cuffed by the leg to a chair inside Sarat police station in Mayurbhanj district, triggering questions over the treatment of detainees in police custody.
According to reports, police restrained the accused by fastening one end of a pair of handcuffs around his ankle and locking the other end to a chair to prevent him from escaping. The accused was reportedly left seated, restrained in this manner inside the police station.
The incident has drawn criticism, with the practice being described as indicative of negligence and raising concerns over adherence to custodial procedures. When contacted, Sarat police station officer-in-charge Ramakanta Patra denied that the accused had been cuffed by the leg.
However, he said the detainee had attempted to flee and was restrained for that reason before declining to comment further. No official statement has been issued by senior police authorities on the incident.
