Baripada: The district administration has resolved to make the Baripada town completely free of polythene use Saturday. A meeting over the issue was presided over by Collector Aboli Narwane at the conference hall of the municipality. Executive officer of the municipality Saroj Kumar Das, engineer Pradipta Kumar Das, volunteers, traders of polythene, Rotary Club members and Marwadi Yuba Manch participated in the meeting.
They discussed on effective measures to curb polythene use. It was decided that penalty will be imposed on people selling polythene and cancel their licence.
They underscored the need for united efforts to ban use of polythene.
The administration decided to organise workshops, to conduct awareness drive and rallies to make advertisements through wall paintings at important places.
Notably, the state government imposed ban on use of certain types of plastic products from Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), 2018, in six cities.
At the meeting, all agreed that traders and shopkeepers will be asked and sensitized not to sell, trade, manufacture, import, store, carry, transport, use or distribute polythene and single-use plastic in town.
Besides, the vendors will not be allowed to use polythene sheets for storing, transporting, dispensing or packaging of any article or commodity or food items, consumables.
If a trader is found to be selling polythene, he/she will be fined Rs 1000. In case of violation of the order for the second time, he/she will be fined Rs 2000.
In the third violation, trade licence of the violator will be cancelled, it was decided.
