Administrative error costs tribal family their home

Boipariguda: An erroneous decision taken by the local administration has cost a tribal family heavily in Boipariguda block of Koraput district.

Parbati Pujari and her family have been left homeless in Kadamguda village of Baligaon panchayat as a result of the lapses made by the administration, according to reports.

Sources said the local panchayat executive officer a few days back had asked Parbati to demolish her thatched house since a concrete house under Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) was granted to her. Acting on the officer’s assurance, Parbati dismantled the old house and waited for the grant to be credited to her bank account. However, the grant never materialized. After a long time, the woman approached the officer who told her he had got some wrong inputs on the basis of which he had asked her to dismantle the old house. However, the officer added that he would try to arrange a house for her under the scheme.

Several months have passed ever since but the family of eight including sons, daughter and a grandson is yet to get a house under the government programme. They are living under the open sky while sleeping inside a makeshift hut, the woman said.

Parbati along with her husband Ramsingh Monday came to Boipariguda to apprise block development officer (BDO) Mataram Leyangi of their plight. The BDO promised to look into the matter.

When contacted, panchayat executive officer Panigrahi while admitting his mistake clarified there are two couples in the village with similar names. He inadvertently asked the wrong couple to demolish their house, Panigrahi said. PNN
