Bhubaneswar, March 22: The Department of Orthopaedics and Anatomy of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar organised a cadaveric workshop on total knee replacement that saw 35 participants from across the country.
Professor Ashok Mahapatra, AIIMS director, stressed the importance of conducting such hands-on workshops for skill enhancement of doctors both in training and in practice. “Joint pains and knee problems have grown among the elderly. Knee transplant is a reliable option for them. AIIMS has been conducting a large number of knee replacement surgeries,” Mahapatra said.
“The burden of knee joint problems is growing among the ageing population, and so the demand for knee replacement surgeries is on the increase. Such workshops will help doctors acquire knowledge about the surgeries,” said Ambika Mohanty, medical superintendent.
The workshop has been attended by Dr Aditya Agarwal from PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr CP Das from SCB Cuttack, Dr Shubhranshu Mohanty from KEM Mumbai, Dr Vijay Kumar from AIIMS Delhi, Dr Varun Chandra from TMH Jamshedrapur and Dr Tarun Goyal from AIIMS Rishikesh.
“This was the first cadaveric workshop on knee replacement in eastern India which was attended by more than 35 delegates from across the country. AIIMS Bhubaneswar also plans to organise such workshops more frequently for training of young doctors and budding orthopaedic surgeons,” said Sujit Tripathy, head of the Orthopaedics department of AIIMS. Manisha Gaikwad, head of Anatomy department, also collaborated on the workshop.
