Ailing jumbo dies

Parajang: An ailing elephant undergoing treatment since Thursday in a forest near Jhurudanali-Jhili village here in Dhenkanal forest division died Saturday.

Some locals had spotted the pachyderm lying in a paddy field and reported the matter to the forest department. Ranger Harmohan Nayak, forester Ajit Dhal and other officials reached the spot while assistant veterinarian from Kankadahad, Tribikram Tarai, started its treatment.

However, despite treatment the animal could not survive. According to the ranger, one of the jumbo’s legs had an injury which subsequently got infected, restricting its mobility.
