Rourkela: The entirety of 4,000 tonnes of special steel used for manufacturing India’s sixth indigenously built stealth frigate INS Vindhyagiri has been supplied by Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). This also includes special rolled plates from the new plate mill (NPM) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) here.
Notably, President Droupadi Murmu launched the frigate Thursday at the GRSE facility on the banks of Hooghly river in Kolkata. The steel supplied by SAIL for its manufacture comprises DMR 249 A grade HR sheets and plates. A Nilgiri-class frigate, INS Vindhyagiri is constructed by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) as part of the Project-17 Alpha frigates (P17A), an initiative undertaken by the Indian Navy that envisions the launch of seven ships. SAIL’s involvement in this ambitious project further exemplifies the company’s steadfast dedication to fostering indigenous growth and innovation in India’s defence sector. This significant milestone comes close on the heels of SAIL’s remarkable contribution to the commissioning of INS Vikrant. SAIL provided the entire 30,000 tonnes of specialty steel for the construction of the first indigenously built aircraft carrier.
