Alleged wrong blood transfusion leads patient to ICU in Cuttack

Cuttack: A patient’s condition became critical as blood from the wrong group was allegedly administered to him at a private hospital in Cuttack, a source said Wednesday.

The patient was identified as Bibhuti Bhushan Jena from Jhola Sahi area in Cuttack. He was under medical care in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the time of filing this report.

According to the source, Jena was admitted to the private hospital as his haemoglobin count fell below the normal range. The doctor in the hospital advised his family members to arrange blood for transfusion.

Subsequently, his family members went to Central Red Cross Blood Bank and brought A+ blood unit as per his requirement. However, Jena’s condition worsened within minutes of the blood transfusion, the source added.

Later, upon investigation of the transfused blood at a private lab, it was found that the blood unit brought from the blood bank was B+ instead of A+, the source informed.

The Director of the Central Red Cross Blood Bank said that the matter would be probed after getting a report from the doctor treating the patient.
