Washington, August 27: Americans are practically addicted to email, checking it around the clock and logging in for six hours a day, a new survey has found. The findings of the survey of more than 400 US-based white collar workers, 18 and older, challenge conventional views of email as a tired, over-saturated medium for engaging consumers.
The survey found that on average, survey respondents reported using email six hours a day. Nine of 10 respondents said they check personal email at work and work email from home. More than one third reported having multiple personal accounts.
Thirty-five per cent said they prefer communicating with colleagues via email, putting it on par with face-to-face collaboration. Americans most commonly check their email while watching TV (70 per cent), from bed (52 per cent), on vacation (50 per cent), while on the phone (43 per cent), from the bathroom (42 per cent) and even – most dangerously – while driving (18 per cent).
Millennials are more mobile and more frequent users of email than any other age group. Millennials are more likely to check work email outside of normal work hours and one third are comfortable using emojis to communicate with a direct manager or senior executive. Millennials are also more likely than any other age group to check email from bed (70 per cent), from the bathroom (57 per cent) or while driving (27 per cent).
