Amid floods in Brahmani river, Rengali dam authorities close 3 sluice gates

Angul: Due to the constant increase in water level in the Brahmani river, authorities of Rengali Dam decided Friday to close all the three sluice gates. The sluice gates had been opened earlier to maintain the water level at Mahanadi river in Mundali. With closure of three gates no floodwater is currently being discharged from the dam. Notably, the dam authorities had opened one of the gates August 23 while the other two were opened August 27.

The authorities had taken the decision to release the excess water after it went past the maximum permissible limit. Currently the water level has receded to less than 123.5 metres which is below the maximum limit. Hence the decision to close the sluice gates was taken.

Rengali dam, constructed on the Brahmani, is located about 70 kilometres from Angul town. Constructed in 1985, the dam is 70.5 metres tall and 1,040 metres wide. At full level, the dam holds 3,412 million cubic metres of water.
