Anurag to lead Orissa in absence of seniors

Cuttack, Jan 2: Orissa batsman Anurag Sarangi has been named captain of the state squad for the upcoming East Zone Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 cricket tournament which will be played at Ranchi, January 8-16. The Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) announced a 15-member squad for the meet, Tuesday.

Senior players Govind Poddar, Biplab Samantaray and Basant Mohanty were not named in the team. “Govind, Biplab and Basant are unavailable for the first few games because of their personal commitments. So we have chosen Anurag as skipper,” informed OCA selection committee chairman Bishnudev Mohanty.

Seniors like Paresh Patel, Lagnajit Samal and Jayanta Behera have made a comeback into the side while former Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Abhishek Rout has been selected for the first time.

Former India opener Shiv Sunder Das who was appointed as the Chief Coach during Ranji Trophy will continue in this tourney as well. Orissa play their matches against Bengal (January 8), Assam (January 10), Tripura (January 12) and Jharkhand January 16).

The squad: Anurag Sarangi (captain), Sandeep Patnaik, Rajesh Dhuper, Paresh Patel, Subhranshu Senapati, Devendra Singh Kunwar, Prayas Singh Thakur, Abhishek Rout, Suryakant Pradhan, Alok Sahoo, Debabrata Pradhan, Jayanta Behera, Ashutosh Das, Debasish Samantaray and Lagnajit Samal.
