Cuttack: The Jagatsinghpur district police Sunday arrested an Indian Army soldier for allegedly throwing acid on the face of a girl at Tirtol eight years ago.
The accused was identified as 36-year old Santosh Kumar Bedanta, posted in Kupwada district in Jammu and Kashmir. The police also arrested Biswajit Dalasinghray, who allegedly assisted Bedanta to throw acid, from Kolkata and produced both of them in a court.
Bedanta, who hails from Joragadia in Bhandaripokhari police limits in Bhadrak district, is a Lance Naik in Indian Army, while Dalasinghray is from Champagarh village in Ranpur police limits of Nayagarh district.
Police seized two mobile phones and a two-wheeler used for the crime from their possession.
Eight years after waiting for justice, the family members of the victim had moved the Orissa High Court seeking justice November 13. The victim’s family had pleaded for a CBI inquiry.
The plight of the victim was published in Orissa Post November 14.
“The accused duo has been arrested and brought to the state and were produced in a court,” said Tirtol inspector-in-charge Balaram Nayak.
