Dubai, June 29: Sambalpuri folk dance got global exposure as a dance group in Dubai performed against the backdrop of the iconic Burj Khalifa. The members of the Maa Samleswari Dance Group, Dubai performed Sambalpuri dance, after getting inspired by a similar presentation in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris recently. Sambalpuri dance is an ancient folk dance form, belonging to Western Orissa. It has been performed by various
performers across the globe. The dance also has been presented in Hindi films, like “Kaun Kitna Pani Main.” “The purpose behind performing at Burj Khalifa is to promote this unique culture and the beautiful art form here in UAE” said Surekha Meher, the choreographer. Meher performed with her troupe members, including Chinmayi Behera, Bandita Nayak, Sephali Panigrahi, Trupti Badpanda, Amruta Das, Jagruti Herna and Sriyashree Nayak. The dance comprises of two
popular folk songs “Dalkhai” and “Rangabati”. Dalkhai is a ritual folk dance. Songs sung on this occasion are known as Dalkhai songs. Young girls of Binjhals, Soura and Mirdha tribes perform this dance during Dusserah, Bhaijuntia and other festive occasions. However, non-tribal people also participate in this ritual dance and songs without any hesitations—an indicator of the tribal and non-tribal interaction in Western Orissa. The young girls stand in a line or in a semicircular pattern while dancing.
