Assamese macaques, wild dogs to enthral zoo visitors

Barang: In a first, visitors to Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here will have a glimpse of Assamese macaques and wild dogs with the zoo receiving five new guests Thursday night.

The five guests—a female Himalayan black bear, and a pair each of Assamese macaques and wild dogs—that have been gifted by Aizawl Zoological Park in Mizoram reached the zoo here around 10pm Thursday.

Sources said a five-member team, led by Nandankanan ACF (Sanctuary management) Anjan Kumar Mohanty, went to Aizawl to bring the five mammals June 12.

With the addition of a Himalayan black bear, the number of the species has increased to six. “Assamese macaques and wild dogs are new to Nandankanan. Visitors can now enjoy their sight here,” NZP Deputy Director Jayant Kumar Das said.

“Now they are quarantined and later they will be released into respective enclosures for public display,” Nandankanan range officer Ashok Kumar Das said.
