Aunt, nephew run over by speeding train

Jharsuguda: In heartrending incident, a five-year-old boy and his 45-year-old aunt were mowed down by a train near Belpahar Railway Station here in this district Friday morning.

The deceased were identified as Baby Gupta, wife of Lalji Gupta and her nephew Nikhil Gupta. The incident occurred when Nikhil had come with his family from Brajarajnagar to attend a ceremony in Nuapada at his uncle Lalji’s house.

According to family members, Baby’s husband Lalji Gupta had arranged a feast on the occasion of naming ceremony of a newborn baby girl Thursday. To attend the function, Lalji’s sister Dibya (name changed) had come with her husband Dhananjay Gupta and son Nikhil.

After the function, Dhananjay left for his home while his wife Dibya and son Nikhil stayed back as the Raksha Bandhan was approaching in just two days.

Early Friday morning, while playing around, Nikhil heard the Howrah-Ahmadabad Express train approaching at Belpahar station. Excited, the boy ran from the house and strayed into the tracks to see the train.

In bid to save him, Baby also ran behind him. But, unfortunately both of them were hit by the train.

While Baby died on the spot, locals rescued Nikhil in a critical condition and rushed him to TRL Hospital. However, the boy also succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment.

The Government Railway Police seized the bodies and sent it for postmortem. The incident spread a pall of gloom in the area. A case of unnatural death has been registered in this connection.
