Awards presented to film, Odissi doyens for lifetime achievement

Bhubaneswar Sept 9: Jharana Das and Guru Kishore Kumar Mohanty received lifetime achievement awards for their contribution to cinema and Odissi respectively on the concluding day of the 22nd Guru Kelucharan Mohaptra Awards festival at Rabindra Mandap Friday. They received the awards from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The event also saw the Yuva Prativa Samman being presented to Rajib Bhattacharya for Odissi. The other awardees at the function were: Madhusmita Mohanty (Odissi), P Praveen Kumar (Bharatnatyam) and Rupak Kumar Parida (Odissi vocal). Also, Madhubrata Satapathy received the Guru Kelucharan Mohaptra Nrutya Kala Samman 2016 for “exemplary commitment to the practice and performance of Odissi”.

The awards ceremony was followed by presentations of dance. Artistes of Srjan presented the dance drama “Tyaga” — the story of Anusuya, her leper husband Bishnu Das and Lakhyaheera. It narrates the tale of Anusuya who sacrifices her life for her husband. Students of Srjan gave a flawless presentation of the composition choreographed by Guru Ratikanta Mohapatra.

Minister for industries, school and mass education Debiprasad Mishra; former member of Board of Revenue Ashok Kumar Tripathy; and commissioner-cum-secretary, culture and I&PR department Manoranjan Panigrahi were among the dignitaries present at the function.
