Baby dies due to medical negligence in DHH

Nayagarh: An 18-month-old boy breathed his last due to alleged medical negligence. It happened while the baby was undergoing treatment at Nayagarh district headquarters hospital here Saturday. 

Tension prevailed at the DHH after Subham’s parents Damodar Hati and Sarojini Hati of Krushnachandrapur village under Nuagaon block accused the staff for their irresponsibility. Many other patients also raised their voice against the medical staff for their attitude.

According to sources, Subham was affected by fever late Friday night. His family members admitted him to the DHH after his condition worsened after he vomited at 3 am. Meanwhile, a doctor who was on duty administered a saline to the baby and left.
Shockingly, no doctors and nurses turned up to check on the baby’s health.

Sensing the child’s movement was becoming weak with the passage of time, Damodar pleaded with some doctors and nurses to attend to the baby but to no avail. No one paid heed to his pleas and turned him away. Later, a doctor came to check Subham only to declare that he was already dead. Irate over the incident, Damodar informed his family members and relatives who reached the DHH and held a demonstration.

Sensing trouble, the hospital authorities hurriedly arranged a van and asked Damodar to take the body to his village. Even after repeated deaths of women and minors in the DHH over alleged medical negligence, there has been no change in the attitude of the hospital authorities, locals said.

Meanwhile, ADMO Ajay Kumar Bahinipati refuted the allegations stating that three doctors including a pediatrician had looked into the baby’s health. However, other patients stated that no doctors checked the baby that led to his death.
The doctor who administered the saline also disappeared. They demanded stringent action against the accused doctor. Locals said many doctors in the DHH do not attend to their duties but get their salaries.

It may be noted here that, a doctor’s house was looted taking the advantage of his absence a few days ago.  PNN
