Jajpur: A fresh flood threat has emerged in Odisha’s Jajpur district as the Baitarani River continues to rise, triggering concern among residents of Dasarathpur block, which has already endured prolonged flooding this season.
At around noon Sunday, the river’s water level at Akhuapada reached 17.82 metres, nearing the danger mark of 18.33 metres.
With the level still rising, authorities and residents fear that low-lying areas of Dasarathpur could once again be inundated.
The latest rise has been attributed to rainfall in Kendujhar district under the influence of a low-pressure system.
Residents are particularly concerned about vulnerable embankment sections and existing breaches that could allow floodwater to enter nearby villages.
Floodwater from the Kani River, a branch of the Baitarani, could flow through open breaches at Dobavil-Patana in Tarpada panchayat and Kantapada, posing a serious threat to surrounding areas.
Two additional breaches have been reported along the Baitarani embankment near Mahapatra Sahi in Jayantara.
Residents fear that any further rise in the river could push water through these weak points and inundate the locality.
The renewed threat has added to the hardships faced by hundreds of flood-affected families in Dasarathpur.
The block has been dealing with flood-related problems since July 6, with the crisis now extending to 56 days.
Four major embankment breaches reported July 28 forced several families to leave their homes and seek refuge on embankments, rooftops, relief centres and at relatives’ houses.
Even after more than a month, many affected families remain unable to return home.
With the Baitarani continuing to rise, residents are now bracing for another spell of floods and urging authorities to strengthen vulnerable embankments and take immediate steps to prevent further damage.
