Baragada Dhanu Yatra to get new Kansa actor

Baragada Dhanu Yatra

Baragada: Sushil Meher, who played Kansa in last year’s Baragada Dhanu Yatra, has sought a one-year break from the role, paving the way for a new actor in the 2027 edition of the famous festival.

Meher, a resident of Chichinda village in Bheden block of Baragada district, submitted a written request to District Collector and Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Committee president Aditya Goyal Monday. He cited mental distress following criticism of his performance, despite receiving appreciation from several quarters.

Meher said he was taking a break only for the 2026-27 edition and remained willing to reprise the role in future, as his three-year agreement with the committee was still in force. The 11-day festival will be held from 12 to 22 January 2027.

The selection process for the next Kansa actor remains undecided. Goyal said the artistes’ advisory committee would meet Wednesday, October 28, to discuss Meher’s request and decide on the next steps.

Last year, 44 artistes applied for the role, with Meher securing the top position in the selection process. His portrayal, however, drew mixed reactions, with some groups demanding his removal and others backing his continuation.
