Bhubaneswar, Feb 9: The state government Friday appointed Yamini Sarangi, a 2008 batch IAS official, as the district magistrate of Bargarh and Jai Narayan Pankaj, a 2005 batch IPS officer, as Superintendent of Police of the district. The officials were transferred from their respective posts at Jagatsinghpur in keeping with an election commission order.
A General Administration Department notification issued Friday stated that Sarangi had been posted in place of incumbent Khagendra Kumar Padhi. The notification further said Jagatsinghpur Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Sachindananda Sahoo will remain collector in-charge, Jagatsinghpur, until further orders. Pankaj will replace current SP Jugal Kishor Kumar Banoth. He has been asked to join by 10 am Saturday.
Election Commission of India had asked the state government to recommend the names of three IAS and as many IPS officials with experience in conducting elections to take charge as Collector and SP at Bargarh. The ECI move followed a complaint lodged by the BJP against the Bargarh collector and SP. The commission selected Sarangi and Pankaj from the list the state had provided.
“The ECI has also appointed IAS officer Abhishek Chandra as general observer and IRS officer Sunil Kumar Yadav as an observer of expenditure of political parties and candidates for the Bijepur by-election scheduled February 24,” state Chief Electoral Officer Surendra Kumar said.
He added that the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers had passed and that 13 candidates were in fray for the Bijepur seat. The assembly seat had fallen vacant following the demise of Subal Sahu, the Congress MLA elected from the constituency.
