Bears stroll into Koraput, cause frenzy

Koraput: The picturesque little town of Koraput got some unexpected visitors over the course of the week as over three bears wandered into the town in the last four days, sending residents into a tizzy.

Four days back, officials of the forest range got the fright of their lives when a bear sauntered into their office. The officials scampered to safety, took some deep breaths and later managed to scare the animal out of the office and into the woods after about four hours.

Two more bears decided to visit the town Wednesday morning. While one strolled into the district court premises, another decided to check out the tribal museum campus. Frenzied employees called the forest department officials who rushed to both places armed with tranquilizer guns.

While one of the bears managed to escape into the forest, the other bear strayed into the police station and the nearby post office. It later hit the road and disappeared into an under-construction building in Banabharati area.

Officials of both the forest department and the police kept guard with tranquilizer guns to prevent the animal from causing trouble. Several forest officials including the DFO and ranger were involved in the operation, sources said. PNN
