Bhubaneswar, March 16: Art lovers made a beeline to the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya to witness an art exhibition organised by Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi in the city Monday.
“Crimes against women are on the rise in the state. Nowadays there are also a lot of complaints regarding domestic abuse, which generally goes unreported. This indicates an overall rise in women abuse which needs to be countered not through threat of punishment but through awakening the conscience of the people. These paintings are therefore a step in the right direction and I appreciate the initiative to highlight this issue,” said a visitor.
Around 94 paintings were displayed at the venue, all works by famous artists from across the state. The paintings were collected from various art exhibitions which were held for the past seven years in districts like Angul, Cuttack, Malkangiri, and Balasore.
Secretary of Lalit Kala Akademi Tarakant Parida said, “This is an opportunity for art lovers to get a glimpse of famous paintings from other districts at one place. We’re pleased to have got such a good response from visitors on the first day itself.”
Artists from different states were provided free accommodation.
President of the Akademi Siba Panigrahi said, “We invited the painters to exhibit their paintings here in the capital in order to encourage the budding artists of the city. As a token of respect, we will reward the painters with Rs 10,000 each for their efforts.”
The cultural body will hold a state-level exhibition soon in this summer, Panigrahi added.
