Bhubaneswar: A suitable curriculum, proper textbooks and a conducive environment are essential for candidates from Orissa to shine in the Civil Services Examinations, said aspirants whose names feature on the list of successful candidates released Wednesday.
Sagarika Nath, who bagged the 199th rank, pointed the finger at the low level of exposure and the lack of a suitable curriculum when asked why Oriya students do not achieve much success in the Civil Services Examinations.
“The state textbooks of Orissa do not go well by with the UPSC pattern. The NCERT books are of more use to UPSC aspirants. This is compounded by the dearth of quality study material in the state,” said the 28-year-old, whose father is senior deputy GM (electrical engineering) at Nalco.
“A more interactive environment on the college and school campuses, where teachers and students can discuss various issues is conducive for success. This is very common in the colleges of Delhi University,” said Haris Bin Zaman, of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar, who has secured the 742nd rank in the examination.
Zaman and some other successful candidates suggested that aspirants could move to big cities and turn towards cyberspace to avail of better opportunities to help them do well. “In small cities, where people lack access to a lot of material, they rely on cyberspace and it comes as a boon to them, he said.
When asked if the CSAT paper which includes reasoning and English, is advantageous for only a certain section of society, he said: “The Union Public Service Commission has worked on this and rationalised it. Now no one can have an advantage. Now candidates only have to pass the CSAT paper for which they need to secure just 33 per cent marks. Its marks are not included in ranking. In the prelims, only general studies paper counts for selection.”
However, Dibya Jyoti Parida, who secured the 26th rank in the exam, said that determination and consistency is the key to success in the Civil Services Examination.
