Balasore: The police department is laying emphasis on improving police-public relations as part of its continued efforts towards bringing down the crime rate, DGP Kanwar Brajesh Singh said here Sunday while inaugurating a new building of Sahadevkhunta police station.
The DGP said efforts are being made to strengthen the police force by way of additional recruitments and promotions.
“As many as 700 constables were promoted to the post of ASI, 600 ASIs were promoted as inspector, 150 inspectors as DSPs and seven DSPs to the rank of additional superintendent of police,” Singh said, adding a new police academy has been set up at Burla in Sambalpur and it will start functioning from July.
Expressing concern over the rising crime scene in Jajpur, Balasore and other towns, the DGP observed that criminals are running a parallel rule at these places. “Efforts are on to make the state crime-free with the help of technology and by way of strengthening infrastructure,” Singh added.
Northern range DIG Ghanshyam Upadhyaya underscored the need for improving infrastructure at all police stations, stating that people coming to police stations to lodge complaints find no space to sit.
Stating that many police stations do not have women and child desks, the DIG added that all such infrastructures will be put in place in a phased manner.
Among others, ADM Manmath Kumar Pani spoke on the occasion and put forth a proposal of posting of more police personnel in Balasore district.
Zilla Parishad chairperson Urmilata Das laid thrust on traffic control in the town. While Remuna MLA Gobinda Chandra Das mooted an idea of making the new police station a Mahila police station, Sadar MLA Jiban Pradip Das urged the DGP to take steps to run a police outpost in the old building of Sahadevkhunta police station.
The DGP also inaugurated new buildings of SDPO office at Nilagiri, reception hall and women and child desk at Rupsa police station.
