Bhadrak tragedy: Bodies were consigned to flames

Bhadrak: The five school children who were mowed down by a speeding ten-wheeler truck Friday night were consigned to flames on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

The last rites of four were performed in the village and one of them was taken to Swargadwar in Puri.

A ten-wheeler ran over nine school children at Ranital chhak near Rahanja in Bhadrak district Thursday while they were crossing the National Highway 16.

Four were killed on the spot and one succumbed to the injury later on in the district headquarter hospital.

The other injured students are being treated at Bhadrak DHH while one has been shifted to Cuttack SCB whose condition is stated to be critical.

Soon after the incident thousands of irate locals blocked the road and vented their anger by torching the vehicle. To maintain law and order the police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

The prevailing tension caused an inordinate delay for the funeral rites of the deceased.
