Bhubaneswar/Kolkata: In a joint operation, Thursday, a police team comprising personnel from West Bengal and the state nabbed a wanted Naxalite from a tea stall near a hospital at Chandrasekharpur here. Alik Chakraborty, who was under treatment at Kalinga Hospital, is the politburo member of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), a Naxalite outfit known also as ‘The Red Star’.
Personnel from the CID of West Bengal had been on the lookout for Chakraborty, who is in his mid-40s, since he took part in the anti-Power Grid movement at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district last year. The protest had turned violent and two persons were killed in the unrest.
Residents of about 30 villages in Bhangar under the banner of ‘Jami, Jibika, Poribesh O Bastutantra Raksha Committee’ (Committee to protect land, livelihood, environment and ecosystem) had been protesting against the project for some time. About 70 cases, including those for murder, are pending against Chakraborty, who was also booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
“We had inputs that he had gone to Bhubaneswar for treatment. We picked him up from a tea stall outside a hospital in Bhubaneswar,” Baruipur SP Arijit Sinha said.
Police said they were able to zero-in on the ultra based on surveillance and tapping of his telephonic communication.
