Bhubaneswar: A woman from Salia Sahi slum in Bhubaneswar allegedly sold her three-month-old baby boy for Rs 6,000 to fund her remarriage, a source said Saturday.

According to the source, the woman is a single parent and was facing difficulties in managing household expenses following the death of her husband. She also has a toddler daughter.

The widow recently came in contact with a sanitation worker from Behera Sahi slum in Rental Colony locality. The man wanted to buy the baby boy from her as he had no male child, the source said.

Besides, the man assured her of getting her remarried in New Delhi. The woman, after much reluctance, agreed on the proposal and sold her infant to the sanitation worker to fund the wedding. The man had taken her thumb impressions on a blank court paper to avoid legal action, the source added.

Acting on an FIR lodged by Khurda Childline members with Nayapalli police, a case in this connection was registered and a probe was initiated. Following a joint raid conducted by local police and Childline members, the baby was rescued from the possession of the sanitation worker.
