Bhubaneswar, Nov 15: Weightlifter Bijay Kumar Satpathy will be conferred the ‘Bijay babu Lifetime Achievement Award’ by Sahid Sporting Club at a function, January 16 here.
The weightlifter who is only the second person from Orissa to receive the Arjuna Award in the sport will be honoured for his contribution to the development of the game in Orissa.
Giving this information during a media conference in the city Sunday, officials of the club informed that athletics coach Neelamadhab Deo will also be honoured with the IVth Kamal Ganguly Memorial Sports Award, 2015. He will receive cash reward of `20,000 along with a certificate and a special blazer.
The selection panel comprised of eminent journalists and officials of the club. The awards are being given since 2012.
Double whammy
Anshu Bhuyan emerged men’s singles champion in the KDTA Orissa Open Tennis Championships which concluded here Sunday. In the men’s final Anshu was leading 6-1, 3-1 when his opponent Santosh Mallick conceded the tie citing injury. Anshu bagged `15,000 and a trophy for his efforts while Santosh got `7,500.
It was double delight for Ansu as later in the day, partnering Abhilash Mallick he won the doubles title defeating Satirtha Patnaik and Ajay Nishank 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the final. The mixed doubles crown went to Avilash Sahoo and Rutuparna Choudhury. In the final they defeated the pair of Shilpi Swarupa Das lalit Dash 10-4.
