Biker killed in mishap; locals block road

Purunakatak (Boudh): Tension prevailed at Chari Chhak Bazaar under Purunakatak police limits in Boudh district when a biker died after being hit by a speeding pick-up van, Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Ganesh Behera (20), a resident of Gunduribida village.

Irate over the incident, locals staged a road blockade, demanding immediate arrest of the van driver and compensation for the bereaved family.

The incident took place at around 9.30 am when Behera was on his way to Purunakatak. Meanwhile, the van coming from the opposite direction collided with his bike after the driver lost control on the wheels.

While Ganesh died on the spot, the van skidded off the road. Locals damaged the vehicle and blocked the Khurda-Bolangir National Highway-57.

On receiving information, Purunakatak police rushed to the spot and placated the protesters. The agitators relented after the police assured them action and necessary compensation for the victim’s family.

A case was registered and the body was seized for autopsy.
